Our group this year is different to the group that we had last year therefore we will all be evaluating our own previous coursework. This in a way will help us because we potentially all bring good aspects to the group.
Positive Aspects
I think the layout of our previous blog was to a high standard aswel as fitting in with the style which we were looking for. As we were doing an old fashioned gangster theme, we decided to have a totally black and white blog. I believe this went very well with the brand that we were trying to create. we knew that this would not give us any extra marks but we thought it would give a better account of ourselves.
I also think that the theme we went for in the film was individual and made us stand out from the rest of the groups. Before we decided what genre we wanted to do our film on last year. We had a look through previous films to see what had not been done before and a gangster thriller came under that category. Also we all had an interest in gangster films as we all loved films like ‘Goodfellas’ and ‘Reservoir Dogs’.
Towards the end we used a lot of videos as blogs, especially in the evaluations as it shows a wider knowledge of uses of media. This saved time, as we were not writing huge essays so we could then concentrate of more important aspects of the course.
Once we had chosen the style of film we decided straight away the storyline which meant that we had a longer period of time to decide upon how we would film it. We needed to recruit gang members for the film, so we would needed a longer period of time to film anyway so that we could fit it all in with everyones timetables. We filmed fairly quickly which left us with longer to edit and improve what we had.
Areas for improvement
In order to take our coursework to the next level this year, we need to be organised in all aspects of the course. I think that we should delegate certain blogs to certain people so that everyone knows exactly what they have got to do and also you are able to give the blogs to the people who would be best at them. This is something that we should have done last year in order to get an A instead of a B.
Also we will need to be organised with the filming, by getting a lot more footage whilst having the opportunity. Last year, Jack Norton and I had to go back on a separate day to get some more footage on our own as we knew that the film would not be long enough without it. This was a lot of hassle and took time out of our editing time, which could have been a serious problem. As we were editing, we also found that we could have done with some extra angled shots and some more close ups of the gang.
Time management is also an area of improvement. I did not realise the amount of work which was needed to do, so I started with a lacklustre approach when I should have been completing blogs a lot quicker. This meant towards the end we were rushing the blogs and they were not as good as they could have been. On a few of the blogs at the beginning, we used a lot of writing where as we could have used a video or some added pictures which would have worked better. We started doing this towards the end.
Also our camera skills need to be mastered as on some of the shots the camera was shaking. This makes your film look unprofessional which is something that we will need to work on.
Spell checking our work was something that will need to be improved this year. Out of laziness, we didn’t do this last year and it is very important that we do this year. It does not give a good account of the group if there is a lot of grammatical errors and spelling mistakes.
Overview
Overall I believe that this year’s course work will be to a much higher standard due to the knowledge the we have from last year. We know how much work there is, how quick is needs to get done and to the standard in needs to be completed. We also know how to use the cameras, blogger and pinnacle which will save time as we don’t have to learn how to use them all again.
